Eros Breaks Out

Josh Marshall on Senator Larry Craig (the Bathroom Senator, as my husband says).

Perhaps this is not the best part of me. But I must confess that quite apart from the larger issues of public and private, public acceptance of homosexuality and Republican politics, I am in favor of an aggressive defense on Craig's part simply because I cannot resist the novelistic clash of pathos, hypocrisy and ridiculousness of seeing Craig's effort to 'clear his good name' torpedoing the White House's September Petraeus propaganda campaign.

Eros Beats Thanatos! Dionysius Vanquishes Mars! Bacchantes stampede the halls of power! Hippies Win!

Make Love, Not War

If You Try To Make War and Stop Love, You'll End Up Like Larry Craig!

Woo hoo. We Left Coast libertines are feeling pretty smug about all this today. If only Larry Craig had the courage of Barney Frank or Liz Cheney - he'd be happily married to some nice male decorator by now, and he could practice his environment-trashing, poor-bashing Republican politics from the comforts of a happy homosexual home, surrounded by his loving family.

For as long as society shames people for their sexual preferences, men and women will lie as Larry Craig does, and seek out illicit sexual contact. It's a fact of human nature.

Gosh I hope that this latest bout of Republican sexual hypocrisy does, indeed, torpedo Bush's insane war(s).
