The Dove cares about food issues and the environment as much as she cares about the Middle East. Thus the number of food related posts on this blog. Today's SF Chronicle writes about food activists and small farmers bringing healthy produce to poor neighborhoods, largely in Oakland and San Francisco.
There's an untold story in here about the Arab-Americans who run the grocery stores and liquor stores throughout these struggling neighborhoods. Not all of this story would be sunny - liquor stores plague the inner city. But The Dove notes that two markets selling fresh produce in the article are owned by people with Arabic surnames. Yemeni grocers have their own association in Berkeley, and Palestinians, Jordanians and other Arabs abound in the small corner store business. Let's hope the trend toward replacing Fritos with fruit continues, and that Arab-Americans get some recognition for their efforts in the inner city.
