The Dove believes that a great deal of the world's problems today could lessen if everyone simply obeyed the rule of law. There would still be disputes on interpretation, but some big conflicts would have to settle down. One major area is in the dispute in Israel and Palestine. From Yahoo! News - Israel Under Internal Pressure on Barrier.
By Peter Enav, AP writer: "JERUSALEM - A Supreme Court order and a rare admonition from the attorney general increased pressure on Israel to reassess its West Bank security barrier Friday as a senior government official said the country would have to explain why it won't heed a world court ruling to dismantle the contentious structure."Attorney General Meni Mazuz on Thursday warned that the International Court of Justice's July ruling at The Hague (news - web sites), Netherlands, urging Israel to tear down the barrier could lead to sanctions against the Jewish state.
"Mazuz's warning — an unusual acknowledgment that the country could be punished because of its policies toward the Palestinians — coincided with a Supreme Court order giving the government 30 days to produce a statement about how the world court's decision would affect the barrier's construction. "
Both the United States and Israel ought to respect the rulings of the World Court, for their own future self interest if nothing else. We'll never know when we may need the Court to enforce a law in our favor.
A Palestinian representative said on the radio that Israel is welcome to put up whatever barriers she wants to, along her lawfully recognized border. The West Bank does not belong to Israel, no matter how many illegal settlements they built there.
(The Dove doesn't believe that any security barrier will create actual, lasting security for Israel in any case)
Let's hope that the legal minds of the Israeli judges and attorney general will sway Sharon and friends.
