Helena Cobban of Just World News alerts us to a new book she helped produce: When The Rain Returns: Toward Justice and Reconciliation in Palestine and Israel, published by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).
"This book describes the experiences and analyses of an International Quaker Working Party, composed of eleven Quakers and three friends-of-Quakers, who recently visited Israel, Palestine and neighboring countries. It includes their deliberations on what they saw and learned in discussions with more than 90 individuals representing a range of personal histories and political views. It also provides background information, maps, and appendices and can be a valuable resource in understanding this very complex troubling issue."
From the mission statement of the AFSC:
"This AFSC community works to transform conditions and relationships both in the world and in ourselves, which threaten to overwhelm what is precious in human beings. We nurture the faith that conflicts can be resolved nonviolently, that enmity can be transformed into friendship, strife into cooperation, poverty into well-being, and injustice into dignity and participation. We believe that ultimately goodness can prevail over evil, and oppression in all its many forms can give way."
Those Quakers make the Dove feel less like a lonely crackpot. Hold on to that vision. Meanwhile, we'll be ordering the book.
