Evelyn Shakir led the short story workshop at RAWI, unfortunately at the same hour as my panel. But I had a lovely conversation with her, and she later sent me her vitae. This is the blessing of a conference - you meet real people and find out about their writing. I'm ordering her book Bint Arab, about Arab women immigrants to the US in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I'll also be subscribing to the Baltimore Review, which will be publishing one of her short stories in the fall. A collection of Arab American fiction called Dinarzad's Children, edited by Khaled Mattawa and Pauline Kaldas, will also go in my shopping cart; Evelyn has a story there, too.
The summer reading list is just about full.
