Of the NY Times conservatives, David Brooks seems smarter than Friedman. However Brooks loses major points in my book by frequently (almost once a week) devoting an entire column to some pre-fab GOP "Talking Point". This week's lame Brooks column was "See, we told you the European economies can't last".

On rereading the Friedman quote after a week, it seems particularly flaccid. Little changes? The right has been attacking civil liberties with all their power - to me it's not mere "little changes". Friedman speaks to ossified establishment apparatchiks in language they can tolerate; he comes across as lily-livered to my ear. But then, the kind of people who would listen to Thomas Friedman would not want to hear opinions from me, or from anyone to my left.
