Jonathan Edelstein alerts us: Israeli, Palestinian Mayors Promote Peace - from the Guardian UK.
Israeli and Palestinian mayors meeting discussed sharing scarce water resources and jointly developing tourism during talks in the Netherlands, participants said Friday.
The nearly 40 mayors said they hoped working together would foster an atmosphere of trust and help move peace efforts as Israel prepares to withdraw from the Gaza Strip this summer.
The local Israeli and Palestinian authorities said they would hold regular talks on improving the economies and living conditions at home.
I'm reminded of the Sustainable Cities conference of mayors held in SF this past weekend, focused on the environment. Our national leaders are failing us, so our mayors step up to solve the problems that threaten our children's futures. Water rights and other resource issues are key to real peace. Perhaps real change will percolate upward from the villages and cities.
