Khalil Bendib is the first Muslim-American political cartoonist. Check out his cartoon titled Lebanon Exit.
Warning. Khalil's cartoons have been known to offend Zionists and occasionally others. He's into scathing satire - he's a political cartoonist! Consider yourself put on notice.
He's also a warm, kind human being who participates actively in Jewish-Arab dialogue in the East Bay. Furthermore, he's a talented sculptor in bronze, ceramics and other media, with a worldwide following.
Laila: What Bendib cannot have known is that one of Israel's formative nationalist poets, Natan Alterman, wrote one of his most memorable poems, 'B'Magash Ha-kesef' ('On a Silver Platter') about the ultimate sacrifice offered by Israel's pioneer Palmach fighters during the '48 War.
His was a romantic-heroic view of such sacrifice. Bendib's cartoon is a perfect sendup of that attitude & how it has been corrupted by Israel's military adventurism.
By the way, I never especially liked Alterman's politics or worldview, but he was THE Israeli poet of the post-48 period.
