My first cousin, son of my mother's sister, died in Virginia Tuesday, March 27 at the age of forty-nine after a massive stroke. Besides being a devoted son to his recently widowed mother, and a loving husband, Barton B. Cregger was a dynamic professor and dean, someone who kept the gears turning for a huge organization. Update: his obituary in his hometown paper, the Roanoke (Virginia) Times.
We are bereft. May he rest in peace.
Heartfelt condolences to Aunt Susan, who has suffered terrible losses this year. We love you so much and our prayers are with you. And deepest sympathies and condolences to Norma, Bart's beloved wife and love of his life, who has also suffered much in this past year.
To my other readers and friends - Barton Cregger is not the blogger from Sacramento who is also my (second) cousin, Randy Bayne. Randy did take beautiful photos of Aunt Susan, Barton's mother, at our family reunion; sadly Barton couldn't make that trip because he had a big conference at home in Virginia that weekend.
This is so tragic. Your family has been through so much recently. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Hello Leila. I am Bart's step-son-in-law if there is such a thing. He walked my wife, Norma's daughter, down the aisle at our wedding. I had heard that Bart had Arab blood in his family, but hadn't met any of his family other than Susan and Frankie until the funeral. He was prepared, it would seem, when I made him a Mahshi, Kibbeh, and Tabouleh dinner a couple years back. Your blog on Bart is very kind and I know that Susan would appreciate it if she saw it. Julia will see it and will, no doubt, show it to her mother, and both of them will appreciate it. Bart was a great guy, good friend to my family and to me. We'll miss him greatly...haram.

I did not know Bart, but my heart goes out to his family and friends for their loss. I am trying to get a hold of Norma, his widow, but so far I am unable to reach her. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I was in the middle of trying to catch up to some high school friends on Facebook when I stumbled across a link to the Barton Cregger Memorial group. I was shocked, and my heart goes out to all those who knew Bart. What a great guy! It was great to read about his students and colleagues at VCU who had great things to say about him. Bart and I grew up together from 6th grade through high school. We were Safety Patrol buddies in 6th grade. We occassionally caught up at UVa when I was visiting my HS sweeteart. Passing Bart's childhood home on Preston Ave a few weeks ago with my Mom, we reminisced about the fun we had growing up in Roanoke. I am so sorry that I was not aware of his passing. My best wishes to Stephanie and Susan. I know he is missed greatly. Mark Richards, William Fleming Class of 1976.
